Mariela Pino

M Sc, Agronomist, Mariela Pino D. Member Support Programme Coordinator for GAIA Latin America and the Caribbean / GAIA & BFFP

Mariela has been working in the world of waste for about 15 years, seeking to promote and realise solutions that are ecologically sensitive; and socially beneficial, fair and sustainable. First understanding the realities of the global south from the world of biodegradable waste, from the rural needs of energy supply, food security and quality of life.

Later, in her country of origin, she became involved in the issues of municipal solid waste in the Alianza Basura Cero Chile (Zero Garbage Alliance Chile), and she moved closer to socio-environmental activism. Today she is part of the GAIA team in Latin America, where she coordinates the support programme for members, and also has a role as a link to the global team around the climate strategy, specifically in the world of methane.

This is a space where zero waste practices are promoted, where public policy advocacy and knowledge are carried out, and where links are made with key actors to make the fight against plastic pollution, incineration and other false solutions a real one.
